There are multiple options available to transfer a pressurised force into either a rotary or a linear motion, these air operated actuators utilise a piston under pressure to move a rack and pinion to create the movement when attached to such items as valves.
The single acting spring return version is considered the fail safe option, if the air supply should fail then the actuator will return to the closed position and prevent loss of media being transferred. The double acting version is used where air pressure is required to open and close the valve to control the direction of flow.
